Ottawa Civic and Ottawa General Hospitals were each doing their own thing when it came to research. The Ontario Government had forced the two hospitals to merge their efforts and administrations but the hospitals' research arms initially refused.

Along with two other colleagues, Dr. Mark Poznansky was called in to review the issues at hand. He saw that there was tremendous duplication between the two research organizations. He also determined that the community was highly confused as to what each hospital's research program did, which perhaps was why fundraising was so poor. Dr. Mark Poznansky helped facilitate the amalgamation of the two hospitals' research administration and streamlined the top management level by eliminating one of the Chief Operating Officers. Today, the research institute is very strong and considered to be world-class.
